Stone and Brick Masonry
Repairs or frequent restorations by a mason:
Redo the mortar joints of a brick wall or stones (repointing)
If you need to have your brick or stone wall repointed (yes, that’s the word, even if you’re looking for “rejointing” or “rejointed”), it’s important to know that the mortar must be first scraped on a depth of two to two and a half times the thickness of the joint. So it’s not a small task. The mortar must be removed from both adjacent masonry surfaces and cleaned. It is only then that it is possible to refill the joints using a mortar compatible with the masonry element in place and with the existing mortar.
Replace crumbled bricks
If you have bricks that have deteriorated over time to the point of being crumbled, they will have to be replaced because they are no longer strong enough to be reinstalled and perform their function.
Repairing a bulge out of a brick wall
If you have your brick or stone wall inflated, you are probably struggling with a frost boil. This is a common masonry problem caused by water seepage into the mortar joints of a brick or stone wall that causes the masonry to become detached from the building structure over time. This is a problem to be resolved as quickly as possible to avoid escalating repair costs. A frost boil is often discovered too late and the wall must be completely redone. See our article on frost boils on our renovation blog.
Bricking or installation of an interior stone wall for aesthetic purposes
Whether for a fireplace mantel or a wall of an apartment, brick or stone coverings are noble materials that go through the test of time.
